The Nigerian navy and army say they killed 34 fighters in two operations in the Lake Chad area, in Borno State. The toll includes 28 deaths during an offensive on 28 October and about six others in a strike on a Boko Haram enclave in Dumba, according to the director of naval information.
Nigerian forces have killed 34 fighters in two operations around Lake Chad, in Borno State. Marines from the Nigerian Navy and soldiers from the army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade carried out the offensives as part of Operation Hadin Kai, according to Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, director of information for the Nigerian Navy.
The toll from the first operation, conducted on 28 October, was revised from eight to 28 fighters killed after a fresh damage assessment. A targeted strike on a Boko Haram enclave in Dumba, carried out on Friday after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, killed about six more people. This latest toll remains subject to verification, Abiodun Folorunsho said.
Marines from the Nigerian Navy were recently deployed to reinforce joint operations in the Lake Chad region. Their involvement aims to identify insurgent hideouts, disrupt the activities of armed groups and reduce their freedom of movement, according to the spokesperson.
The announcement comes after several operations announced in north-eastern Nigeria, including the killing of 44 fighters in Borno on 29 October and the killing of 48 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on 30 October.
