Nigerian troops killed 48 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters while repelling attacks on military positions in Borno and Yobe states between 29 and 30 October, according to Vanguard and TimesLIVE, which cited military spokesman Captain Mohammed Goni. One soldier was killed and two others were lightly wounded, according to both media outlets.
In Bitta, Borno state, troops backed by air support repelled a night attack before launching a counter-offensive against ISWAP fighters targeting the military training school in Buni Yadi, Yobe state. The fighting continued into the early hours of Friday, Goni said, according to TimesLIVE.
The army says it recovered 42 AK-47 rifles, five PKT machine guns, four general-purpose machine guns, one 60mm mortar, 105 magazines and several thousand rounds of ammunition, Vanguard reports. TimesLIVE says Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks on military positions have intensified in recent weeks, despite years of operations aimed at containing the insurgency, which has continued for 17 years in north-eastern Nigeria.
