Niger’s Judicial Police seized 6,520,000 CFA francs in counterfeit banknotes and arrested a man at the weekly market in Birni N’Konni, in the Tahoua region. The operation, conducted on 23 October, targeted suspected counterfeit-currency trafficking to Nigeria, according to the National Police, quoted by Journal du Niger.

All the seized banknotes were in denominations of 10,000 CFA francs. Investigators suspect they were to be converted into naira before being transferred to Nigeria. A warning from the Association of Foreign Exchange Agents prompted the intervention and led to the suspect’s arrest.

The seizure follows several operations against crime in Niger, including the seizure of more than 50 kg of cocaine in Arlit, announced on 29 September. It also comes amid heightened customs checks, with the seizure of fuel, cigarettes and dynamite in Zinder.
