A Mauritanian judge has remanded Allassane Sy, a former Masrivi bank employee, and Lassana Camara, presented as the initial winner of a draw, in custody. The case concerns a draw held on 9 October and the alleged manipulation of the participants’ file, according to journalist Souleymane Hountou Djigo.

A judge has remanded Allassane Sy, a former employee of Mauritanian bank BMCI, and Lassana Camara, initially named the winner of a Masrivi draw, in custody. The two men spent the night at Dar Naïm prison, Mauritanian journalist Souleymane Hountou Djigo reports for Kassataya.

According to the journalist’s account, Allassane Sy admitted manipulating the file for the 9 October draw so that Lassana Camara, whom he describes as a friend, would win. He also said Camara knew about it. Camara says the bank informed him that he had won a car before he learnt the draw had been manipulated and would be held again.

BMCI had announced that it would bring legal proceedings after the manipulation was discovered, according to a BMCI announcement of legal action. The journalist reports that the employee allegedly entered Camara’s name in the file more than 300,000 times and was dismissed after the bank’s internal investigation. The draw was cancelled and then held again.
