Power cuts mount in Nouakchott

Nouakchott has endured repeated power cuts for two weeks, while a fire broke out this week in Teyarett, following earlier fires in Toujounine and Tevragh-Zeina. The Mauritanian Electricity Company cites an overload, but this is seen as an insufficient explanation amid mounting incidents, according to Kassataya.

Power cuts have been recurring in Nouakchott for two weeks, amid a new fire this week in the Teyarett neighbourhood. SOMELEC, Mauritania’s electricity company, cites an overloaded network, but this explanation is not enough to account for the growing number of outages, according to Kassataya.

The disruptions come two months after fires in the Toujounine and Tevragh-Zeina neighbourhoods. The repeated incidents are becoming politically embarrassing for the Mauritanian authorities, following a recent change in SOMELEC’s management, Kassataya reports.

The appointment of Tijane Thiam as head of SOMELEC on 15 October, followed by the dismissal of officials after electrical substation fires on 20 October, are part of this sequence of events. These developments are covered in articles on the new director-general of SOMELEC and the officials dismissed after the fires.
