Mauritanian government spokesman Mohamed Ould Bebana says Nouakchott has made no official territorial claim concerning Lagouira. He also said Mauritania had no dispute with its northern neighbours after a Council of Ministers meeting, according to Kassataya.
Mauritania does not officially claim Lagouira, a territory located in the north-west of the country, government spokesman Mohamed Ould Bebana said on Wednesday evening. The Mauritanian Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament said that Nouakchott had no dispute with its neighbours, particularly those to the north, according to Kassataya.
Mohamed Ould Bebana called for a distinction to be made between information circulated by the media and positions expressed by the authorities. He explained that the steps discussed regarding the clarification of borders were intended to avoid ambiguities with security, legal or economic consequences, without constituting a territorial claim, according to Kassataya.
The spokesman reaffirmed Mauritania’s commitment to a peaceful and consensual solution within the framework of the United Nations. His clarification comes as the status of Lagouira and the borders between Mauritania and Morocco are being discussed in Mauritanian and international media.
