The Gambian government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, signed a concession agreement on Wednesday 28 October to build integrated waste treatment facilities in The Gambia. The signing took place at State House in Banjul, before work was launched in Tambana, in the West Coast Region, according to Starr FM.
The first phase provides for the financing and construction of a mechanical and biological treatment plant, as well as transfer stations. Zoomlion will also collect and transport municipal solid waste. The project provides for the closure of the Bakoteh and Mile 2 dumpsites and the recovery of materials such as plastics and metals.
The second phase, planned after the project’s second anniversary, is to extend waste management to liquid waste and other regions of the country. Gambian Environment Minister Rohey John Manjang presented the partnership as an initiative intended to improve sanitation and create jobs for young people and women.
