Kayelekera mine prepares first uranium shipment from Malawi

The Kayelekera mine, operated by Lotus Resources Limited in Malawi, is due to ship its first uranium consignment by the end of the week. The product will pass through Zambia and Namibia before conversion in France, after the required approvals were obtained, according to the company.

Lotus Resources plans to ship the first consignments of uranium from the Kayelekera mine in Malawi this week, after mining resumed last year. The Australian company has obtained the necessary approvals to transport the ore, according to information published on its website.

The uranium concentrate will be transported through Zambia to the port of Walvis Bay, in Namibia, before being sent to Orano CE’s conversion facility in France. Lotus is targeting a first export departure from Walvis Bay in November.

The initial shipment is to comprise four containers, with about 145,000 pounds of uranium concentrate. The approvals obtained include those from the Malawian Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency, a Zambian transport licence and approvals from the Namibian authorities, the company said.

The shipment is part of the resumption of activity at Kayelekera, where mining operations restarted last year.
