Officials dismissed in Mauritania after power station fires
By the AFREEQUE newsroom, based on Kassataya

After fires broke out in late August at two transformer stations belonging to the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC), several officials, including a minister and two chief executives, were dismissed. The files were referred to the police unit responsible for economic crimes, reports Le Calame, cited by Kassataya.
The Mauritanian Prime Minister denounced the waste of public funds during an inspection visit to infrastructure projects in Nouakchott on Saturday 17 October. “We will not accept the waste of public money,” he said in front of ministers, senior civil servants and the companies responsible for the work, reports Kassataya.
The head of government referred in particular to poorly managed tenders, contracts awarded to insufficiently qualified companies and the construction of infrastructure that did not meet standards, according to Kassataya.
The inspection follows the publication of a report on two electrical fires in Nouakchott, and the formation of an expanded government of 29 ministers after the report on the power plants, on 12 October. Prime Minister Moctar Ould Diay had been reappointed on 9 October by President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.
