Several students were injured during a police intervention at Nouakchott Al Aasriya University in Mauritania, following a peaceful protest against the criteria for awarding scholarships and university accommodation, Senenews reports. Witnesses cited by the outlet said security forces entered classrooms and other university spaces and beat students.
The protesters also denounced rising transport fares. Some students reportedly lost their accommodation because they were now required to register with the Taazour Agency through the Social Register, according to Senenews.
The protest comes as Mauritanian students extended their strike in Nouakchott on 24 October. On 16 October, Mauritania announced it would cover urban transport costs for 9,926 students.
