Atiku Abubakar condemns the reported assault on Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, and an incident involving ADC supporters. The former vice-president accuses the ruling party of intimidating the opposition ahead of the 2027 election and calls for transparent investigations, reports Punch.
Former Nigerian vice-president Atiku Abubakar condemned on Saturday the reported assault on Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in Ekiti State. He also denounced a separate attack on supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, according to a statement published on his X account.
Atiku Abubakar called for immediate and transparent investigations. He accused thugs linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of targeting opposition officials and activists ahead of the 2027 general election.
Ekiti police said they rescued Omoyele Sowore after an altercation at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti on Friday. Its spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, said the candidate had suffered a minor injury and had been taken to the police hospital. The state commissioner, Michael Falade, ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
In Sokoto, ADC governorship candidate Manir Dan’iya said a rally attended by about 5,000 women and young people had been disrupted. He mentioned several injuries, damaged vehicles and stolen items, while local police said they were investigating the confrontation.
Atiku’s condemnation comes after eleven suspects were arrested over the assault on Sowore, an arrest announced on 31 October.
