Senegalese MP Cheikh Bara Ndiaye accused President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of not officially inviting Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, to a ceremony organised by the Presidency. In a post entitled “The Republic on the ground!”, he criticised the handling of invitations, SeneNews reports.

Senegalese MP Cheikh Bara Ndiaye accused President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of not sending an official invitation to Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, for a ceremony organised by the Presidency. In a post entitled “The Republic on the ground!”, he said this absence would be a first since Faye came to power, SeneNews reports.

Cheikh Bara Ndiaye argued that the Presidency was responsible for invitations and protocol arrangements, despite the role assigned to the Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (COJOJ). He also put forward a political explanation: according to him, Bassirou Diomaye Faye wanted to avoid Ousmane Sonko’s presence “stealing the limelight”.

The controversy comes as the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are at the centre of several official events. On 26 October, Bassirou Diomaye Faye handed the flag to the 136 Senegalese athletes.
