Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party has called cash assistance of 50,000 naira for vulnerable people a panic-driven response by the APC-led federal government. The opposition party says the measure will not change the expected vote in 2027, according to its national publicity secretary, quoted by Leadership.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, described the federal government’s cash assistance of 50,000 naira for vulnerable Nigerians as a panic reaction by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government. PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong said the measure reflected the government’s concern ahead of the 2027 election, Leadership reported.
Ini Ememobong said the assistance would not, in the PDP’s view, change the majority of Nigerians’ desire to vote the APC out of power. He compared the government’s reaction to that of someone threatened with drowning who clings to any object, Leadership reported.
The statement comes amid political campaigning ahead of the 2027 presidential election. On 31 October, an aide to opposition politician Atiku Abubakar accused Bola Tinubu of pressuring the opposition, while the government had denied the previous day that the presidential election scheduled for 16 January would be postponed.
