The Polisario Front expressed concern after the rejection of a US draft resolution on the Sahara and the cessation of MINURSO operations. The movement led by Brahim Ghali accused some Security Council members of promoting policies contrary to the peace process, according to a statement cited by Yabiladi.
The Polisario Front has contested the cessation of MINURSO operations, the UN mission tasked with monitoring the ceasefire in the Sahara, confirmed at midnight on Saturday, New York time. In a statement issued on Saturday evening, the movement led by Brahim Ghali expressed its “concern” and warned against any measure that could undermine the peace process and the mission’s mandate, Yabiladi reports.
The Polisario nevertheless welcomed the non-adoption of the US draft resolution, rejected on Friday after Russia’s veto and abstentions by China, Pakistan and Somalia. It thanked these countries as well as Algeria, while accusing some Security Council members of promoting expansionist policies. The movement has also claimed to have unilaterally ended the ceasefire since 2020, while saying it wants to preserve MINURSO’s role.
The reaction comes after the Russian veto of the US resolution on the Sahara on 30 October, and after Polisario statements about the risk of a breakdown in the peace process in the Sahara on 22 October.
