Algeria’s UN ambassador, Amar Bendjama, linked the question of the Sahara to Palestine during an address to the Security Council. Algiers also thanked Russia for vetoing a US draft changing MINURSO’s mandate, according to TSA.
Russia vetoed on Friday 30 October 2026 a US resolution seeking to change the mandate of MINURSO, the UN mission in the Sahara, TSA reported. Algeria welcomed the veto as well as the Russian draft to renew the mission’s mandate, presented by Moscow to the Security Council.
Algeria’s ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, defended the right to self-determination and challenged the desire to limit this principle to autonomy. He also said that negotiations should seek a solution acceptable to all parties, rather than impose a predetermined conclusion, according to TSA.
Algeria had asked to take part in the Security Council meeting as a neighbouring country, a host country for Sahrawi refugees and a UN member state committed to international law, according to TSA.
The veto came after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s statements on 30 October about the right to self-determination in the Sahara and after Vladimir Putin reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Algeria and Russia on the same day. Tebboune reaffirmed the right to self-determination in the Sahara, while Putin reaffirmed the strategic partnership with Algeria.
