Morocco’s UN ambassador, Omar Hilale, accused Algeria of banning weekly demonstrations in support of Palestine. He was responding to his Algerian counterpart during a Security Council session on the Sahara, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
Morocco’s ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, accused Algeria of banning demonstrations in support of Palestinians during a Security Council session in New York on Friday 30 October. “Here in Morocco, there are always demonstrations every week in support of the Palestinian people. Whereas in Algeria, these demonstrations are banned,” he said, addressing his Algerian counterpart, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
Omar Hilale reproached the Algerian ambassador for coming to “give lessons” on Palestine while, he said, preventing the Algerian population from expressing itself. The diplomat has represented Morocco at the UN since 2014, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
The exchange took place as the Security Council examined the extension of MINURSO in the Sahara, whose mandate was due to expire on 31 October. Diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria have been severed since 24 August 2021, while the Sahara remains their main point of disagreement at the UN.
