Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed on Thursday 29 October at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow that a settlement to the Sahara conflict must guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He also praised Russia’s support for the United Nations-led process, according to TSA, which reported on his address, read by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb.

Tebboune said that security and stability in Africa depended on eliminating the last vestiges of colonialism. He welcomed the resumption of negotiations between the parties to the conflict under UN auspices at the beginning of the year, and called for a consensual, fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution based on the United Nations Charter and Security Council resolutions.

The position comes on the eve of a Security Council vote on a US resolution concerning the Sahara and the renewal of MINURSO’s mandate. Sifi Ghrieb represented Tebboune at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, where the Algerian president had also spoken about the Algiers Declaration at the gas summit.
