At the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit in Moscow, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Algeria would remain a reliable gas supplier to Europe. His message, read by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, also noted that Algeria is the European Union’s second-largest pipeline gas supplier, TSA reports.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Tuesday at the summit of heads of state and government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow that Algeria would remain a “safe and reliable” gas supplier. His address was read by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, according to TSA.

Tebboune recalled that Algeria is among the world’s top ten gas producers and the European Union’s second-largest supplier by pipeline. The country also exports liquefied natural gas to several markets. He cited the liquefaction complex built in Arzew in 1964, described as the world’s first.

The president also reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a project with an annual capacity of 30 billion cubic metres intended to carry gas from Nigeria to Europe via Niger and Algeria. He said his country would contribute its expertise and capital to the project, which he presented as a tool for cooperation between countries of the Global South and for tackling energy poverty.

The remarks came a day after Algiers announced it would send soldiers to Niger to protect its economic interests, particularly in energy. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb is also representing Tebboune at the gas and Russia-Africa summits being held in Moscow, according to an article on his participation.
