The Algerian government is preparing a new method for calculating the integration rate for heavy and light vehicles and mobile phones, to distinguish components actually produced from industrial processes carried out locally. Presented at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on 21 October, the approach aims to develop local production and reduce imports, according to the Prime Minister’s Services.

The Algerian government is revising the mechanism for calculating the local integration rate for heavy and light vehicles and mobile phones, to measure components actually produced and industrial processes carried out in the country, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Services published after the government meeting on Wednesday 21 October.

The mechanism is intended to encourage these industries to establish themselves, increase local production and reduce the import bill. The government aims to move beyond simple assembly by strengthening partnerships, technology transfer, skills and the subcontracting network.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, also considered an assessment, one year after its launch, of the 2025-2029 national strategy for preventing and combating narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The results of the action plan, based on prevention, deterrence and care, were presented; its effectiveness will be assessed monthly at government level.

The authorities also stressed the need to step up field work and action in neighbourhoods, with the participation of civil society. The new calculation method comes amid increased scrutiny of imports, following the creation of a permanent committee to monitor imports, announced on 13 October.
