Lagos wants to raise food self-sufficiency from about 20% to 40% of demand through increased production, processing and distribution capacity. The target is set out in a five-year agricultural roadmap presented at World Food Day in Ikeja, according to the Lagos State government cited by Punch.
Lagos State wants to raise its food self-sufficiency from about 20% to 40% of demand by increasing agricultural production, processing capacity and distribution networks. Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat presented the target on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the 2026 World Food Day celebration in Ikeja, reports The Punch.
The five-year agricultural and food roadmap includes a central food security and logistics centre at Ketu-Ereyun, along the Epe axis, as well as agricultural produce platforms at Abijo, Dairy Farm, Opebi and Bombata. The first phase of the Ketu-Ereyun centre is at an advanced stage, while the Abijo and Dairy Farm platforms have already been commissioned, according to the Lagos government.
The plan also aims to reduce intermediaries and waste through last-mile distribution networks. Its implementation is based on a renewed partnership with the BATN Foundation, which supports farmers and agribusinesses, reports The Punch.
Lagos’s target comes after Nigerian food self-sufficiency faced difficulties, already attributed to imports and insecurity on 16 October.
