Power Compact to modernise Senegal's electricity network

Power Compact investments are expected to modernise Senegal's electricity grid, strengthen SENELEC and extend access to electricity to 12.7 million people. Oumar Diop, director general of MCA-Senegal, presented these objectives during the annual review of the electricity roadmap to 2035, according to Senenews.

The Power Compact could reduce electricity costs for 12.7 million Senegalese people, Oumar Diop, director general of the Millennium Challenge Account Senegal (MCA-Senegal), said during the fourth annual review of the electricity sector roadmap to 2035. The meeting was held at the Noom Hotel and organised by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum with the support of MCA-Senegal II.

According to Oumar Diop, the programme's investments include modernising the electricity grid to reduce technical losses and improve energy transmission and distribution. He also cited the strengthening of SENELEC's operational capacity, particularly through computerised tools for managing equipment maintenance.

The official recalled that SENELEC had made efforts in generation, but that fuel supplies and rising oil prices remained challenges for the sector. Other initiatives discussed during the review included creating a one-stop shop and integrated low-cost planning. The meeting also marked the close of the Senegal Power Compact Reform Project.
