Senegal has a housing deficit of around 500,000 units, Territorial Collectivities, Regional Planning and Territorial Development Minister Moussa Bala Fofana said. Senegal estimates its cumulative housing deficit at nearly 500,000 units, Territorial Collectivities, Regional Planning and Territorial Development Minister Moussa Bala Fofana said at the opening of the International Housing Fair. The shortfall is growing each year as new needs emerge, according to the minister, quoted by Senenews.
The shortage is driving up rents and reducing households’ purchasing power. In Dakar, more than one household in two is reportedly a tenant, and housing costs are putting pressure on budgets allocated to education, healthcare and savings, according to data presented at the fair.
The sixth edition of SenHabitat, organised over three days around the theme ‘Sovereign housing: Sunu Dëkuway’, brings together public and private stakeholders in construction, real estate and planning. The government wants to address the crisis through the National Programme for Urban Renewal and Sovereign Housing, whose guidelines were presented by Moussa Bala Fofana.
