A modern landing site costing 1.7 billion CFA francs will be built at Cap Skirring, in the Ziguinchor region, to strengthen small-scale fishing infrastructure. The funding is being provided by the World Bank through the Senegal Natural Resources Management Project (SENRM), according to Senenews.
Senegalese Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy Amy Mara inspected the progress of the resettlement of people affected by the project on Thursday 22 October. Temporary shelters for traders and facilities for processing fishery products are nearing completion, ahead of the launch of the main construction work.
The future landing site will cover 6,800 m². Amy Mara also laid the foundation stone for the future control post at the fishing quay site, according to Senenews.
The project is part of the modernisation of fishing equipment in Casamance, following the launch of three fish-processing units in the region on 22 October.
