Senegal has launched construction in Ziguinchor of three fish-processing units in Mangacounda, Baghagha and Fanda. Funded by Japan and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations with the Ministry of Fisheries, they are intended to reduce post-harvest losses and support the incomes of women and fishing communities, according to the ministry.
Senegal’s Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Dièye, launched construction work on three fish-processing units in Ziguinchor on 21 October 2026, Lesoleil reports. They will be established in Mangacounda, Baghagha and Fanda, in Casamance, as part of the ‘Anaré Difal’ project, a Diola expression meaning ‘the women of the sea’.
Funded by Japan and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) with Senegal’s Ministry of Fisheries, the initiative aims to improve hygiene and occupational safety for women processors, reduce post-harvest losses and increase the incomes of fishing communities. Amy Mara Dièye also stressed that preserving the quality of fish contributes to food security and sovereignty.
Bintia Stephen Tchicaya, FAO regional coordinator for West Africa, said investment in women would benefit families and local communities.
The launch came two days after the start of the 2026-2027 tourist season in Cap Skirring on 19 October, in another part of Casamance. The tourist season in Cap Skirring was notably marked by the arrival of Transavia.
