Nigeria has stopped funding overseas training after spending 220 billion naira over 10 years, Education Minister Tunji Alausa said. According to him, 80% of beneficiaries did not return and the funds are now being redirected to specialised centres at Nigerian universities.
Nigeria has ended the overseas training programme funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), after spending 220 billion naira on it over 10 years, Education Minister Tunji Alausa announced on Thursday. According to him, 80% of beneficiaries did not return to Nigeria after their training.
The government has redirected these resources towards strengthening Nigerian institutions and creating specialised training centres. Twenty-eight Centres of Excellence have already been established in 23 public and private universities, and the robotic surgery academy inaugurated at Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State has become the 29th centre supported by TETFund, according to the minister.
Alausa also announced that TETFund would finance eligible health professionals to undergo specialised training at the academy. He justified the change by the desire to develop skills in Nigeria and reduce dependence on foreign institutions.
