Senegal’s public prosecutor has added the dissemination of false news to the charges against Papa Saliou Ciss, also known as “Kaylor”, who was remanded in custody after being brought before the urban security police. The 30-year-old content creator is due to stand trial on Wednesday, Senenews reports, citing the daily Libération.
The case also includes alleged charges of defamation, unlawful collection of personal data, incitement to racial discrimination and incitement to hatred. The complaint was filed by El Hadji Boubacar Ba, president of the National Federation of Shopkeepers for Modernisation, over videos posted on the TikTok account “@keylor1004”.
The videos referred to an alleged boycott of local products, including Kirène, Séo and Casamançaise water, as well as sugar produced in Senegal. El Hadji Boubacar Ba believes they damage the reputation of traders and could fuel tensions between Senegalese and foreign traders. Kaylor admitted he had made the posts during questioning in the presence of his lawyers, while disputing the intentions attributed to him, according to Senenews. He was brought before the prosecutor after a complaint was filed in Dakar on 23 October.
