Nearly one million Nigerian pupils are receiving free digital lessons through a partnership between Airtel Africa, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the federal government, according to the Vanguard newspaper. The initiative removes data charges for access to learning platforms and offers content on digital skills, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.
The programme has connected nearly 2,000 schools and reached more than 20,000 teachers. In Lagos, pupils at Government Senior College in Agege demonstrated how they use digital tools and artificial intelligence in class, while young people at Yaba College of Technology presented skills they had gained for employment and setting up businesses.
UNICEF’s Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Rownak Khan, welcomed free access to lessons and Airtel Nigeria’s support in making the platforms available without data charges. She stressed the importance of ensuring that girls, children with disabilities and pupils in underserved communities can also benefit from this learning.
