Nigeria has added 544 megawatts of electricity transmission capacity through four substations commissioned in Kano, and reconnected Lee Group to the national grid after more than 30 years. A 132/33 kV substation is also due to be completed in Katsina in March 2027, according to the Federal Ministry of Power.
The Nigerian government has added 544 megawatts of transmission capacity to the electricity grid in Kano State after commissioning four substations in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi, according to a statement carried by ThisDay. The work was carried out by the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria, in partnership with the Kano State government.
Walalambe substation now has two 40 MVA transformers, providing 80 MW of capacity. Kumbotso received 330 kV equipment, including 300 MVA and 100 MVA transformers, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi each received an additional 100 MVA transformer at 132 kV. The infrastructure is intended to ease congestion at overloaded substations and improve power supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas.
The industrial group Lee Group has been reconnected to the national grid after operating independently for more than 30 years. Six feeders installed at Walalambe will serve the Tokarawa industrial area, the Eastern Bypass, the Maiduguri and Hadejia roads, and neighbouring communities, according to ThisDay.
The federal government also plans to complete a new 132/33 kV transmission substation in Mashi local government area, Katsina State, in March 2027.
