President Bola Tinubu presents the doctrine of Nigerian Army chief of staff Waidi Shaibu as the foundation of a more professional, mobile and combat-ready force. The approach marks, he says, a shift from static defence towards offensive operations, in the foreword to a book on the doctrine, reports ThisDay.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu presented the doctrine of Waidi Shaibu, chief of staff of the Nigerian Army, as the foundation of a more professional, adaptable, operational and resilient army, reports Nigerian daily ThisDay. In the foreword to the book “The Shaibu Doctrine: Mission Command and the Remaking of Nigeria’s Army at War”, he said the army was moving from static defence to more mobile offensive operations.
Bola Tinubu said the transformation was based in particular on the adoption of technology, local production of military equipment, improved soldiers’ welfare and the strengthening of military ethics. The book also examines decentralised command and troop protection as levers of operational effectiveness, according to ThisDay.
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, meanwhile promised to document and preserve the legacy of ECOMOG, the West African force involved in several peacekeeping operations. The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, assured veterans that welfare measures would be maintained and called on them to participate more actively in the national security architecture, reports ThisDay.
The move comes after the strengthening of military cooperation between Nigeria and Rwanda, announced on 22 October. It also reflects Bola Tinubu’s stated desire to make the armed forces a support for the security needed for democracy and Nigeria’s development to function.
