Switzerland releases 45 million litres of diesel from reserves

The Swiss Confederation has released 45 million litres of diesel, nearly 4% of its mandatory reserves, in response to tensions in energy supplies. The Federal Office for National Economic Supply is also considering a temporary 80 km/h motorway speed limit, according to Aargauer Zeitung.

Switzerland released 45 million litres of diesel from its mandatory reserves on Friday, nearly 4% of the available stock. The volume would be enough to fill around 900,000 50-litre tanks, according to the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES), quoted by Aargauer Zeitung.

With the situation described as “very tense”, FONES has submitted for consultation a proposal to temporarily limit speeds on motorways to 80 km/h. The measure could be preceded by calls to voluntarily reduce consumption, including through car-sharing and the use of public transport, according to the office’s spokesperson, who was interviewed by Aargauer Zeitung.
