The Union of Socialist Popular Forces has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative in the Sahara after the Security Council’s 30 October deliberations. The party criticised the lack of a new resolution extending MINURSO’s mandate and welcomed the Royal Cabinet’s statement, according to its Political Bureau.

The Union of Socialist Popular Forces (USFP), a Moroccan party, reaffirmed on 30 October its support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as a political solution to the conflict in the Sahara. Meeting after the UN Security Council’s deliberations on 30 October, its political bureau also backed King Mohammed VI’s measures, according to a party statement.

The USFP noted that the Security Council had not adopted a new resolution extending the mandate of MINURSO, the UN mission in the Sahara. The party considers that this failure to adopt a resolution goes beyond a simple procedural deadlock and, in its view, highlights a crisis in the UN approach followed for more than three decades.

The political bureau repeated the Royal Cabinet’s argument that the autonomy initiative has the support of more than two-thirds of UN member states, including permanent members of the Security Council. The position comes after the Russian veto of the US resolution on the Sahara on 30 October, which prevented the text submitted to the Security Council from being adopted.
