Morocco’s Justice and Development Party and Party of Progress and Socialism backed a Royal Cabinet statement on recent developments in the Sahara dossier at the UN. The PPS called, among other things, for the issue to be permanently removed from the Security Council’s agenda, reports Yabiladi, citing the positions expressed by both parties.

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) backed a statement by Morocco’s Royal Cabinet on developments in the Sahara dossier at the UN Security Council. The PJD reaffirmed its support for King Mohammed VI and for the defence of Morocco’s sovereignty and unity, while the PPS welcomed the royal statement, according to Yabiladi.

The PPS said the 11 votes in favour of the US draft resolution showed growing international support for Morocco’s approach, despite Russia’s veto. The party also regards the non-renewal of MINURSO’s mandate, the UN mission in the Sahara, as a step towards resolving the issue, and called for it to be permanently removed from the Security Council’s agenda, according to Yabiladi.

The statements came after Russia vetoed the US resolution on the Sahara on 30 October, and as MINURSO’s mandate was due to expire on 31 October. They also followed Rabat’s announcement of the planned withdrawal of MINURSO from the Sahara, reported on 31 October.
