Dakhla's seawater desalination plant will produce nearly 37 million cubic metres a year, including 30 million for irrigation and seven million for drinking water, Morocco's Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Khalid Hatimy, said on Friday. The minister was speaking in Dakhla during a field visit to the project.
According to Khalid Hatimy, the plant is intended to support water and food security as well as the development of Morocco's southern provinces. The project is expected to mobilise nearly 4 billion dirhams in agricultural investment and generate more than 1 billion dirhams in annual revenue, with around 20,000 jobs per year.
The minister and the wali of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, Ali Khalil, attended a presentation on the plant's components and held discussions with local investors. The project extends Morocco's efforts to promote food sovereignty, highlighted by the government on 27 October.
