The Gabonese government has paid 715,326,180 CFA francs to just over 30 people affected by the widening of Okala road in the Delta-Okala area. This first phase concerns beneficiaries whose files have been approved, out of 66 people identified, according to the Ministry of Housing.

Gabon has allocated 715.3 million CFA francs for the first phase of compensation for residents affected by the widening of the Okala road, in the Delta-Okala area of Libreville. Housing Minister Mays Mouissi and Estuaire Governor Marie-Françoise Dikoumba handed over the cheques on 29 October, L’Union reports.

Of the 66 people identified as affected by the project, just over 30 have completed the validation of their files and are receiving compensation in this first operation. The others will be compensated as their files are finalised. The government also plans to allocate plots of land: Mays Mouissi said there should be 66 plots for the 66 people concerned.

Pascaline Pata-Essyngone, president of the collective representing the affected residents, said the beneficiaries were not 100% satisfied, while acknowledging that compensation and land were gains. Families are now waiting to visit the sites earmarked for their resettlement; the minister said he wanted to arrange the visits quickly.

The handover of the cheques marks a stage in the project to widen Okala road in Libreville, a new phase of which was announced on 1 October.
