Ali Akbar Onanga Y’Obegue disputes the legitimacy of the Gabonese Democratic Party delegation received by Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. He says the meeting covered appointments, relations with the Union of Builders and preparations for the party’s next congress, according to GabonActu.
Ali Akbar Onanga Y’Obegue disputes the legitimacy of the delegation from the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) received by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, which was led by Blaise Louembé. The PDG secretary-general, appointed by former president Ali Bongo Ondimba, says the leadership is not authorised to represent the party, according to GabonActu.
Ali Akbar Onanga Y’Obegue maintains that Ali Bongo Ondimba remains the PDG’s president and has not retired from politics. The PDG held an extraordinary congress on 30 January 2025, at which Blaise Louembé took over the party and aligned it with Brice Oligui Nguema, who won the presidential election in April, GabonActu reports.
At the meeting, Blaise Louembé reportedly called for greater representation of PDG figures in appointments made by the Council of Ministers and for the head of state’s support for the next congress. Brice Oligui Nguema reportedly said that he recognised only the PDG represented by the officials present at the palace, not the one speaking on social media, according to GabonActu.
The head of state also reportedly announced a review of appointments, support for organising the congress and constitutional amendments. He reportedly said that the coup of 30 August 2023 had targeted Ali Bongo, his son and his wife, not the PDG, the Gabonese outlet reports.
