Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election as president of Brazil and expressed his willingness to strengthen bilateral relations. According to the spokesperson for the Gabonese presidency, this cooperation could notably draw on the preservation of tropical forests, a shared concern for Gabon and Brazil.

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election as president of Brazil and proposed strengthening cooperation between Libreville and Brasília, particularly on preserving tropical forests, according to an official statement published on Tuesday and the spokesperson for the Gabonese presidency, Théophane Nzame-Nze Biyoghe.

Oligui Nguema wants to deepen bilateral relations through the Tropical Forests Forever Facility, launched by Brazil at COP30 in Belém to mobilise funding for conservation. Gabon is home to part of the Congo Basin forest, while Brazil contains most of the Amazon. Both countries want the ecological value of these forests recognised and to secure benefits for their populations.

The proposed cooperation concerns the protection of ecosystems, funding for their conservation and the management of natural resources. The Gabonese statement presents the initiative as a partnership based on friendship and solidarity.

The announcement follows Oligui Nguema’s discussions with the French ambassador on manganese processing on 21 October, and a project for a cement factory and 500 homes with China, discussed on 19 October. The president had also discussed manganese processing with the French ambassador and the cement factory and housing project with China.
