The Pentagon estimates that operational costs of the US war against Iran exceed $47 billion, including more than $29 billion to replace used munitions. More than $6 billion more would be needed to replace lost equipment and aircraft, according to an estimate reported by Reuters that the Pentagon has not made public.
The cost of the war waged by the United States against Iran exceeds $47 billion, according to the latest Pentagon estimate reported by Reuters. The assessment includes more than $29 billion to replace used munitions and more than $6 billion to replace lost military equipment, including aircraft and drones.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had estimated the cost of the war at $37.5 billion in July. The current estimate also includes operational expenses, such as military flights and IT support. It does not clearly account for the significant costs expected to repair damage to US bases caused by Iranian missiles and drones.
The conflict began in February, when President Donald Trump and Israel launched their offensive against Iran. After a ceasefire in April, Washington imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian oil revenues. US officials told Reuters that the Pentagon was preparing to resume intense fighting if the president ordered it.
The rise in energy costs linked to the war is weighing on support for Republican candidates and on Donald Trump’s approval rating, just days before the 3 November elections that will determine control of Congress. The Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both chambers. The cost of the conflict adds to US preparations for an offensive against Iran after 3 November, reported on 28 October.
