Ghanaian twins Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, have pleaded guilty in the United States in a romance scam case that raised more than $9 million, or about 5.5 billion CFA francs. Their accomplice, 53-year-old Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, also admitted guilt to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to Seneweb.

Between July 2024 and April 2026, the trio allegedly used fake profiles on dating platforms and social media to gain victims’ trust before persuading them to transfer money. The victims were mostly elderly and lived in 25 US states, as well as Germany and Austria, according to Seneweb.

Some of the money was allegedly laundered and then transferred to accomplices based in Ghana and other countries. The defendants agreed to forfeit luxury jewellery and other property seized when they were arrested.

Each faces up to 20 years in a federal prison. Jamal and Kamal Abubakari are due to be sentenced on 9 February 2027, and Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie on 10 February, according to Seneweb.
