In N’Djamena, the price of a sack of onions has risen from 45,000 to 60,000 CFA francs in a few weeks, while a coro has reached 2,500 CFA francs, according to Alwihda Info. The increase is putting pressure on households and reducing traders’ sales.
The price of a crate of tomatoes from Lake Chad rose from 40,000 to 50,000 CFA francs in less than two weeks. Those imported from Cameroon are said to have reached 65,000 CFA francs. Garlic is following the same trend, with a coro selling for 5,000 CFA francs.
Professionals attribute the increase in onion prices in particular to supply disruptions and the possible re-export to Cameroon of part of the produce intended for N’Djamena. This explanation still needs to be verified with wholesalers and the relevant authorities, Alwihda Info reports.
The increase in food prices comes after rents soared in N’Djamena and the impact of the start of the school year on families’ budgets, reported on 29 September and 1 October respectively.
