Moundou town council on Thursday 29 October handed educational equipment to learners at Madaga prison in Chad. The donation includes 16 books for troisième and terminale classes, 80 exercise books, 25 desk-benches, four teachers’ desks and five blackboards, according to Tchadinfos.
Moundou mayor Emmanuel Béassemda Njerassem explained that the handover fulfilled a commitment made on 28 August during a sentence-remission ceremony decreed by the Chadian president. The municipality wants to support prisoners’ learning and their social reintegration through education.
Before the handover, the municipal delegation met the director of the prison administration, Mahamat Hissein, then visited the areas reserved for minors, women and convicted prisoners, as well as the classrooms and sewing workshop. The mayor noted difficulties with water supply and sanitation and said he was willing to consider rehabilitating the pumps and developing septic tanks. The director stressed the urgency of the water-access problems.
The initiative follows efforts to support education in Chad, after the handover of teaching materials to schools in Pala, announced on 29 October.
