Ngabisa Dlamini, headteacher of Vulamasango High School in Eswatini, wants to expand vocational training, improve facilities and make it easier for young people to access higher education and jobs. She runs the institution, which falls under correctional services, and recently earned a doctorate in agriculture, the Times of Eswatini reports.

Dr Ngabisa Dlamini, headteacher of Vulamasango High School, wants to expand vocational training, improve learning facilities and strengthen young detainees’ access to higher education and employment, she told Eswatini News this week. The school comes under His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) and caters for young people in detention as well as adolescents facing behavioural difficulties.

Vulamasango combines general education, psychological support and assistance with reintegration. On admission, pupils are screened and classified so that programmes can be tailored to their needs and abilities, with psychologists, social workers and chaplains involved, Ngabisa Dlamini explained.

The headteacher earned a doctorate in agriculture last week, having studied for it while running the school. In 2009, she began studying agricultural education at the University of Eswatini’s Luyengo campus, after attending Nhletjeni High School. Her plans come amid national concerns about school dropouts in Eswatini.
