The film “Karl Marx, Luanda”, by Angolan artist Kiluanji Kia Henda, will have its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2027, the festival organisation announced on Thursday. The 56th edition will take place in the Netherlands from 28 January to 7 February 2027.

The work imagines an Angola that renews its commitment to communism and tells a love story involving time travel. The festival describes it as a blend of African science fiction and spaghetti western. The film is co-produced by Angola and Portugal, with Portuguese company Wonder Maria Filmes.

Born in 1979, Kiluanji Kia Henda works on collective memory, public spaces and society, particularly through reflection on postcolonialism. He has previously shown his work at the São Paulo Biennial, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern in London and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. He received the Angolan National Prize for Art and Culture in 2012, followed by the Frieze Artist Award in 2017.
