Cape Verdean journalist and researcher Carlos Alberto Sá Nogueira Borges will present his book “As Disputas Políticas na Comunicação Social” in Portugal on 6 November at the University of Beira Interior in Covilhã, Expresso das Ilhas reports. The presentation will take place as part of the international conference “Television and New Media”, held under the theme “Democracy in Times of Anger”.

The book examines the coverage by two Cape Verdean weeklies, A Semana and Expresso das Ilhas, between 2007 and 2012. It analyses their coverage of Cape Verde’s independence, proclaimed on 5 July 1975, and the first free, multiparty elections, held on 13 January 1991.

According to the author, the research examines the links between the media, political power, collective memory and democratic culture, as well as how the press contributes to constructing competing historical narratives. The conference will take place on 5 and 6 November and bring together academics, researchers and media professionals.
