Luanda is expected to have 20.3 million residents in 2050, compared with 11.4 million today, and become sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous city. Lagos would reach 16.2 million, while Bamako and Mogadishu would enter the 15 most populous cities, according to a World Bank report.
Luanda is expected to have 20.3 million residents in 2050, compared with 11.4 million today, an increase of 78%, and become the most populous city in sub-Saharan Africa. The projection appears in the World Bank report ‘Africa’s sub-Saharan urban awakening’, reports Jornal F8.
Lagos, Nigeria, is expected to maintain population growth of 25%, rising from 12.8 million to 16.2 million residents, but will be overtaken by the Angolan capital. Kinshasa, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa are also expected to exceed 10 million residents in 2050, while Bamako and Mogadishu could enter the group of the 15 most populous cities, with 7.6 million and 7.2 million residents respectively.
The urban population of sub-Saharan Africa is expected to rise from 912.6 million to 1.7 billion by 2050. The World Bank estimates that the region will need to create 15 million jobs a year to keep pace with the increase in its young working-age population and recommends better targeting public investment, controlling urban expansion and mobilising more private capital.
This projected growth comes as DP World is to invest $90 million in the port of Luanda, a project presented on 12 October.
