The figure illustrates the persistence of hardship in the country, as the authorities have recently strengthened social protection measures, according to Direct Infos Gabon.
The World Bank estimates that around 729,000 Gabonese people were living below the national poverty line in 2024, despite the fall in the poverty rate observed over the previous seven years. This number declined only slightly over the period, according to the World Bank’s 2026 Economic Update.
This estimate comes as Gabon prepares a manual intended to better protect vulnerable people, announced by the Gabonese authorities on 14 October 2026. The manual to protect vulnerable people is to form part of public responses to hardship.
