Agostinho Neto and Luanda universities have reached an agreement with Angola’s National Space Programme Management Office to create degree and postgraduate courses in space science and technology. The courses are expected to cover Earth observation and satellite telecommunications, among other areas, as part of an update of higher education programmes, Expansão reports.

Agostinho Neto University and the University of Luanda, two Angolan public institutions, have signed an agreement with the National Space Programme Management Office to launch undergraduate and postgraduate courses in space sciences and technologies, Expansão reports. The partnership also includes specialisations and short-term practical activities in the space sector.

The fields covered include Earth observation, satellite telecommunications, geographic information systems, artificial intelligence, data science and electronics. The space office’s director-general, Zolana João, and rectors Pedro Magalhães and Alfredo Buza signed the agreement.

The minister of higher education, science, technology and innovation, Albano Ferreira, told Angolan public television that the courses form part of an update of university programmes. He referred to a skills shortage in science, technology and mathematics, and to the desire to incorporate more digital technology, sustainability and entrepreneurship into the curricula.
