Malibeni High School won 30,000 emalangeni after coming first in the anti-poaching schools competition organised by Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES) in Bhalekane, according to the Times of Eswatini. Five secondary schools took part in the competition, which focused on protecting wildlife and natural habitats.
Madlangempisi High School came second and received 20,000 emalangeni, while Madzanga High School finished third with 10,000 emalangeni. Sikhunyane High School and Mavula High School also took part.
Ishmond Fakudze, RES group public affairs officer, said the competition was intended to bring pupils closer to conservation authorities and neighbouring communities. Contestants presented poems, artworks and talks, and took part in quizzes to spread wildlife protection messages beyond the schools.
RES recovered 3,360 snares from its farm last year. During the same period, 158 wild animals died, two cattle were killed by traps and eight poachers were arrested, Ishmond Fakudze said. The company links the protection of wildlife and livestock to education, community development and relations with neighbouring game reserves.
