Angola’s MPLA summons Higino Carneiro for disciplinary hearing

Angola’s MPLA party has summoned Higino Carneiro before its disciplinary commission after his candidacy for the party leadership was cancelled. The general must appear on Friday 30 October, ahead of the congress scheduled for 9 and 10 December, according to an internal source quoted by Folha 8.

General Higino Carneiro, the rejected candidate for the leadership of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), has been summoned on Friday 30 October at 9am before the disciplinary and audit commission of the ruling party’s central committee. The notification was delivered to him on Thursday 29 October, according to an MPLA source quoted by Jornal F8.

The summons follows the central committee’s decision on 21 October to confirm the cancellation of his candidacy and open disciplinary proceedings. The general wanted to challenge MPLA president and Angolan President João Lourenço at the congress scheduled for 9 and 10 December. The central committee also decided to refer to the Prosecutor-General facts that could constitute document forgery, while Higino Carneiro brought a case before the Constitutional Court on 26 October.

The disciplinary proceedings come after the cancellation of Higino Carneiro’s candidacy, which he had been authorised to challenge on 22 October. The deadline for submitting candidacies for the MPLA’s ninth congress ended on 25 October, Jornal F8 reports.
