The withdrawal of three opposition candidates leaves Adrian Banda, the ruling UPND party’s candidate, as the sole contender for the Mandevu parliamentary seat. The by-election, scheduled for a week after the information was published, was held after the 13 August 2026 vote was cancelled, according to the Zambian electoral commission.
Adrian Banda, the ruling UPND party’s candidate, could win the Mandevu parliamentary seat in Zambia unopposed, after his three opponents withdrew a week before the 5 November by-election. Daniel Chisenga, Daniel Daka and Ntazana Muntungwa confirmed their withdrawals to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), the Zambian Observer reports.
The by-election was called after the 13 August 2026 parliamentary vote was cancelled following an attack on the constituency’s results collation centre. Transmission equipment was destroyed and electoral documents stolen, according to the ECZ, which then deployed Zambian army soldiers, the newspaper reports.
Mandevu joins Mbala, where UPND candidate Felix Mulwanda is to be declared mayor on 5 November after his sole rival, Pythias Sichitalwe of the Progressive Alliance Party, withdrew. The ECZ still needs to officially confirm the outcome of the Mandevu vote, according to the Zambian Observer.
