Bon Kalindo, leader of Malawi First, has given the Malawian government seven days to address fuel and food shortages and corruption allegations. He threatens to call nationwide protests and demands a mid-year budget review, reports Nyasa Times.
Malawian activist Bon Kalindo, leader of the Malawi First party, gave the Lilongwe government seven days on Thursday to explain the measures taken to address fuel and food shortages, corruption and worsening economic hardship. He threatened to call nationwide protests if there was no response, according to Nyasa Times.
At a press conference in Lilongwe, Bon Kalindo also called for a mid-year budget session so that the public could learn how public finances were being managed. The government had cancelled the meeting and planned to reallocate the funds to fuel purchases and the response to the effects of El Niño, reports Nyasa Times.
Malawian President Peter Mutharika is currently in South Africa on a private visit. The ultimatum comes as the opposition accuses the government of worsening shortages and health unions threaten a nationwide strike.
